Ker & Downey Botswana has expanded its luxury safari portfolio with the opening of Maxa, a camp in a remote northeastern section of the Okavango Delta. The camp welcomed its first guests in March.

Located on Maxa Lagoon under a canopy of ebony, marula and leadwood trees, the intimate property accommodates just 12 guests in five tents, including one family unit. Rates start at $700 per person per night, fully inclusive.

"During the past year of construction and exploration, we have observed an incredible array of wildlife, including seasonal movements of large herds of zebra and elephant across the floodplains," said Walter Smith, sales director of Ker & Downey Botswana.

The location offers clear waterways fed by the Okavango panhandle, enabling mokoro (dugout canoe) excursions and potential swimming spots rarely found in safari camps. Activities include walking safaris, day and night game drives, and cultural experiences with the local Bukakhwe tribe.

Design highlights include a suspended net in the trees offering incredible sunset views, elevated decks for wildlife viewing, and a central gathering area featuring a wood-fired oven where the camp chef prepares fresh breads, roasts, and pizzas. The innovative natural pool, purified by water plants and biological filters, exemplifies Maxa's harmony with its environment.

"Maxa represents a breakthrough in responsible luxury travel, blending high-end safari hospitality with cultural immersion and conservation. It's a model for the future of African eco-tourism," Smith said.

The camp showcases locally sourced and handcrafted furniture, highlighting Botswana's artisanal traditions in woodwork, weaving, and pottery.
