Four cruise lines pull Nassau tour

December 01, 2009

Four cruise lines serving Nassau have temporarily canceled the Segway tour to the Earth Village attraction near Nassau in the wake of recent robberies of cruise groups participating in that tour.

Travel Weekly reported last week that Disney and Royal Caribbean temporarily canceled the Segway tour after groups from the Disney Wonder and Navigator of the Seas were robbed by armed men in broad daylight on Nov. 20.

Carnival and Norwegian Cruise Line also have temporarily pulled the tour. All four cruise lines continue to offer several other shore excursions in and around Nassau.

Police have not charged anyone in the robberies. One suspect was questioned for two days but released on the grounds of insufficient evidence, according to the Nassau Guardian.

On Oct. 11, gun-toting thugs held up a group of nine cruise passengers and their tour guide at the Queen’s Staircase attraction in Nassau. No arrests have been made in that case.

In response to the crimes, the Bahamas said that it has stepped up police patrols in popular tourist areas in Nassau.

To all persons claiming that Nassau is a dump, thank you. Thank you for your short-sightedness and your failure to embrace a people, a culture and a country for what they truly are. Stopping into port and stepping into two souvenir shops is not to fully embrace all the island has to offer. Get robbed in the casino or on the street???? PLEASE!! This poor attitude is what strangles any tourist destination. I have been fortunate enough to travel to many destinations across the globe and I was always forewarned to be vigilant and acute to my surroundings - THAT IS THE TRAVEL STANDARD! I am very proud to call my little Nassau HOME!! If you come with a bad taste in your mouth you will surely leave with one - A poor attitude is infectious! Thank you #3 for making a sensible comment, "Crime is everywhere."

I personally do not know why anyone would want to go to Nassau or that part of the Bahamas. It is a dump. When I went I stayed at the Atlantis Resort-that was the only reason I would have ever gone to the Bahamas at all. Disney should consider a cruise to the Hawaiian Islands instead.

like any poor city you must be aware of your environment. until crime is controlled by the powers that be, it is wise for ships carrying american passengers to not dock there. we can spend our money in safer ports. lorraine

Nassau is a dump, it doesn't surprise me that no arrests have been made.
