JetAmerica won't get off the ground as scheduled

JetAmerica, a public charter operator, announced Friday that it is suspending sales to all markets.

The company said it would immediately begin to notify customers and process refunds to all who made bookings.

"We are reluctantly suspending our public charter operations effective today," said CEO John Weikle, CEO, who has been with the company since April.

"Finalizing the slots required to support our charter program at Newark has taken longer than expected, and we have decided to suspend our flights in order to refocus on different markets," said Weikle. "We still strongly believe that there is an unmet need for affordable air service to secondary markets, and we look forward to offering this option again in the near future."

JetAmerica spokesman Bryan Glazer said the company would refund more than $900,000 for bookings made from Aug. 14 through the end of September.

Earlier this month, JetAmerica said it was postponing its launch until Aug. 14. The low-fare charter provider was originally supposed to start service on July 13.

JetAmerica said there were "unforeseen complications" with takeoff and landing slots at Newark Airport. The company said the FAA informed JetAmerica in February that Newark could accommodate it, but subsequently told JetAmerica that the charter provider had to obtain slots.

JetAmerica intended to fly to Newark from Lansing, Mich.; Melbourne, Fla.; South Bend, Ind.; and Toledo, Ohio. JetAmerica also planned to fly from Toledo to Melbourne and Minneapolis-St. Paul, and from Lansing to Melbourne.
